Subject: Request for Troubleshooting Support – LM5149RGYR Buck Converter High-Side MOSFET Failure

Dear [Support Team / Engineer Name / Community],

I hope you're well. I’m reaching out to request assistance troubleshooting an issue I’m encountering with a DC-DC buck converter design based on the LM5149RGYR

Wrench Problem Summary:

The converter is configured to step down from 12–32 V input to 5 V output. However, under load conditions above ~1–2 A, the high-side MOSFET (Q1)—a CSD18534Q5A—either heats up excessively or fails catastrophically. At higher input voltages (>26 V), the output voltage starts to drop significantly, and in one instance, the MOSFET was damaged, resulting in nearly full input voltage being passed to the load.

Chart with downwards trend Observed Behavior:

  • At 0.2 A load, the output is stable at 5.0 V.

  • At 1–2 A, the MOSFET heats up rapidly, and at 2 A it failed.

  • At 4 A, it begins to smoke, even at lower input voltages.

  • At input > 26 V, the output drops to ~4.2 V regardless of load.

Actions Taken:

  • Replaced Q1 with a new unit.

  • Added a 100 Ω gate resistor on HO to gate (later reduced for testing).

  • Tested at reduced input voltage (12 V), which improved behavior temporarily.

  • Investigated layout and replaced decoupling capacitors as needed.

Gear️ Design Info:

  • Controller: LM5149RGYRPCB Sentry Gun Beta Version 1-JUL-2025.zip

  • HS FET: CSD18534Q5A

  • Output: 5 V, targeting up to 5 A

  • Topology: Synchronous buck

  • Switching frequency: ~440 kHz

  • Schematic/layout files can be provided upon request

Pray Request:

I’d greatly appreciate your insight or guidance on:

  • Proper dead-time/gate drive tuning for high VIN use

  • Gate resistor optimization for Q1

  • Suspected layout-induced switching issues

  • Any component-level substitution or filtering recommendations

Please let me know if you require additional details, oscilloscope captures, or design files for deeper analysis. I'm happy to provide any supporting information.

Thank you in advance for your time and expertise.

Best regards,
