BQ25798: MPPT Settings

Part Number: BQ25798

Tool/software:

Hello,

We using the BQ25798 charger in a solar-powered project.

  • Battery: 3.7V Li-ion, 12500mAh (1S5P)
  • Solar panel: 12W, Voc = 24V, Isc = 0.61A, Vmp = 20.7V

I want to set the MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) for best performance.

What value should I set for MPPT based on my panel?

Best regards.

  • Hi Egemen,

The MPPT algorithm periodically measures the input source VOC and sets VINDPM to a ratio of the measurement set by VOC_PCT. The appropriate ratio is dependent on the solar panel and environmental conditions, and should be determined experimentally for best performance. Generally speaking, the MPP is at ~70-90% of the panel's VOC and the default VOC_PCT value of 87.5% should be an appropriate place to start testing your setup. VOC_RATE determines how often the VOC measurement is taken and VOC_DLY determines the length of time the charger stops switching before the measurement is taken. While the charger is not switching, the system is powered by the battery. The best settings for VOC_DLY and VOC_RATE are dependent on your application and desired behavior but the default settings should again be a good place to start. Additionally, the charge current should be set to the maximum value while using MPPT so that VINDPM is always triggered while measurements are taken.

Please let me know if I can help you with anything else.

    Best Regards,

    Austin
