LM3409HV: Led maximum current

Part Number: LM3409HV

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am writing in order to have a clarification. Why does datasheet reports 5A as maximum current for load leds?

Since this is a buck controller i can choose external components with carachteristics compatible with my design.

For ex. i would like to drive a serie/parallel connection of led with 14A total (100% DIM), is there something which is prohibting me from using this device?

48Vin and approx 35Vout at 100% power.

Thank you,

Enrico

  • Hi Enrico,

While this device does not have any integrated FETs, it was not designed to output high currents above 4A. The higher current, the more difficult it is to realize the design for several reasons, one being that the gate driver is not very strong and you will need a large FET to accommodate such high currents.

I would rather steer you towards a multi-phase device which will allow you to distribute your current across two channels per IC.

    Best,
    Daniel

  • Hi Daniel,

thank you for the clear explaination. I will evaluate the device you suggested.

    Best regards,

    Enrico
