LM25148-Q1: The supported protection by LM25148-Q1

Part Number: LM25148-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi BU team

My customer need to check if LM25148-Q1 support below protections and pls share your comments.

1. Support the output overvoltage protection similar with MPQ2918.

2.  After the pre-regulator with LM25148-Q1 works well, short the output to KL30 for 1 minute duration. When the short fault is removed, no any harms happened to this pre-regulator and keep normal operation.

Thanks

  • Hi,

This device has hiccup mode current limiting that protects the device in cases of overcurrent. Once the fault is removed, the output will restart and soft-start. Please see section 8.3.13 of the datasheet for more details on this. Additionally, this device has the ability to implore external overcurrent protection through the use of inductor dcr or shunt current sensing (please see sections 8.3.12.1 and 8.3.12.2).

For OVP, this device has a PGOOD pin that will trip when the output voltage falls out of regulation. This signal can be used to externally turn the device off. Please see section 8.3.4 of the datasheet for more details on this.

    Thank you,

    Joshua Austria

  • Hi Joshua

    Thanks for your comments.

    1. For OVP function, customer wanted to know how LM25148-Q1 protect itself except the PG output function. As listed in MPQ2918 datasheet output over-voltage protection(OVP) section, When OVP faults happen, if LM25148-Q1 enter discharge mode where turn off the HS-FET and turn on LS-FET. Customer doesn't find the similar description in LM25148-Q1 datasheet.

    2. so the answer for below concern is yes, is it right?

[customer concern]  After the pre-regulator with LM25148-Q1 works well, short the output to KL30 for 1 minute duration. When the short fault is removed, no any harms happened to this pre-regulator and keep normal operation.

    Thanks

  • Hi Ted,

    1) It does not look like this part has OVP protection outside of the PG output function.

    2) Yes, more details can be found in the aforementioned datasheet section as to how the device will handle a short circuit condition on its output.

    Thank you,
