LMG1210: Series Resistor Question

Part Number: LMG1210

Tool/software:

Hi,

My customer had a question about the bootstrap supply for this device, Application note SLUA887 is referenced on the LMG1210 product page.  The app. note suggests a resistor in series with the bootstrap diode.  However, section 7.3.1 of the LMG1210 datasheet says:

"There is a 1 kΩ resistor connected between the drain and source of this internal bootstrap switch to allow the bootstrap capacitor to slowly charge at start-up before the low-side FET is turned on."

Further, the LMG1210 eval. board does not include a series resistor.

Are they able to remove the series resistor?

  • Hi Abigail,

Our expert for this device is out of office, and he will be returning this week.

In the meantime, I can jump in to help you with this question. You are correct that there is a 1kOhm resistor internally on the bootstrap line. However, we still recommend an external bootstrap resistor, even if it's a 0ohm placeholder. This is so experimenting different bootstrap resistor values is easier if needed during customer's prototype phase. If the customer finds that the bootstrap resistor is not needed during the prototype phase, then they can remove it from the layout.

    Thanks,
    Rubas
