TLVM13610: Possibility of oscillation when transitioning between PWM mode and PFM mode

Part Number: TLVM13610

Tool/software:

Dear Specialists,

My customer is considering TLVM13610 and has a question.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---

I understand that the condition for switching to PFM mode is when the ripple current approaches 0A.

From Figure 8-3, it seems that the transition to PFM mode occurs at around 0.9A.

Is there hysteresis in the transition between PWM mode and PFM mode?

I understand that the ripple current increases when operating in PFM mode, but I am concerned that the transition between PFM mode and PWM mode may occur depending on the ripple current.

*Transition to PFM mode: ripple current increases → transition to PWM mode → ripple current decreases → transition to PFM mode → ripple current increases → transition to PWM mode.

Are there any concerns about oscillation due to the transition between PWM mode and PFM mode other than the current ripple?

---

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

The TLVM13610 implores PFM, which will change the switching frequency of the device gradually at lighter loads.

This set of videos: https://www.ti.com/video/5769243809001 can help demonstrate PFM more clearly and its utilization in our parts.

In terms of oscillation concerns, this transition is fairly smooth and is employed automatically, so you should not really see oscillations due to this.

    Thank you,

    Joshua Austria
