BQ40Z50: Choice of fuel gauge and charger IC

I am designing a Li-ion battery charger with fuel gauge. My current choice of device is the BQ25820 (charger) and the BQ40Z50 (fuel gauge).

I'm not finding much on how to make these two devices function together. As a charging design newbie, I have a few questions:

  1. Is this a good pairing for the charging/fuel gauge function?
  2. Is there a design document about how to wire the two EVMs for a 3S Li-ion charger? I can see two ways to do it but am not sure either is correct? A document with possible configurations would really help.
  3. Does the I2C bus from the charger connect with the SMBUS from the fuel gauge? The EVM2400 suggests the two buses are not compatible. Does the fuel gauge control the charger via this bus? If not, does the fuel gauge control the charger at all?

    I do not believe there is an exact reference for these two devices together, but typically the output of the charger (along with the application load) will be connected to the PACK connection of the bq40z50 design. In regards to connecting the EVMs, both devices have EVM User Guide files that show how to set them up independently, where the only connection between the two should be to the PACK connection.

    The gauge will not control the charger in this case. For the design, typically a host is used to read information from the gauge and communicate with the charger, where each device will need a different target address if they are sharing a communication line. If you are using EV2400, they cannot be connected to the same EV2400 at the same time.
