TPS53681: TPS53681 Solution/ Any other better solution

Part Number: TPS53681

Tool/software:

Dear Team,

Below are my design requirements:

Input voltage: 12V
Output voltage: 0.75V +/-5%
Output current: 50A DC RMS, 70A PEAK

Product EOL: 2030

I found the TPS53681 solution can be used in my design to meet the above requirements.

Could you please comment on this and also suggest if there are any other solutions which can be better than this?

Regards

Shyam

  • Hi Shyam,

For this output voltage and current, you can use TPS53681 controller along with 2x CSD95410 power stages.

    Troy

  • Dear Team,

Thank you for the quick response.

I have checked the TPS53681 datasheet and found that it has two output channels. Could you please let me know whether I can use single output channel for my requirements and the configuration settings need to take care for the single channel output?

    Regards

    Shyam

  • Hi Shyam,

For your use case there is only a single output, and TPS53681 can be configured to only use a single output.

To set TPS53681 to single channel (no active second channel):

    • Connect BCSP1 to GND
    • Connect BCSP2 to V3P3
    • Connect BVR_EN to GND

This setup informs the controller that it has no active phase on the second channel, and ensures that the EN pin for the second channel is always low.

  • Hi Troy,

    Thanks for the response.

Could you please confirm whether TPS53681 controller along with 2x CSD95410 power stages solution can support the output voltage requirement: 0.75V +/-5%?

If yes please share the datasheet section/page no. where I can get the details for matching the 5% tolerance requirement.

    Regards

    Shyam

  • Hi Shyam,

Yes, this setup can support the +/-5% spec.

Meeting the +/-5% spec will depend on the tuning/compensation parameters on TPS53681. These parameters affect how the control loop responds, impacting VOUT ripple at static load, as well as over and undershoot during load transients. The values can be tuned during testing, to ensure the output voltage stays within the desired range.

These parameters are shown in section 7.5.9 of the datasheet.

    Regards,

    Troy Johnson

  • Hi Troy,

    Thank you for the clarification.

Could you please share the default factory configuration for the 7.5.9 Loop Compensation parameters and default voltage output tolerance & noise margins?

    Regards

    Shyam

  • Hi Shyam,

By output voltage tolerance, are you referring to a max allowable range for voltage ripple and over/undershoot during transients?

The output ripple around the regulated voltage, as well as the over and undershoot during transient events, does not have a default or specified value as they will depend heavily on board layout in addition to the controller parameters.

I can check the default configuration for Loop Compensation parameters, but will require a few days to do so. I will get back with these values by this Thursday, 7/24.

    Regards,

    Troy Johnson

  • Hi Shyam,

Here are the default values for Loop Compensation Parameters:

    • Integration Time Constant - 2us
    • Integration Gain - 1x
    • AC Load Line - 0.75mΩ
    • AC Gain - 1x
    • Ramp - 200mV

Keep in mind that these values should be adjusted to meet the needs of your design during testing. The range of values accepted by these parameters can be seen in the device's Technical Reference Manual, found on TI.com.
