BQ28Z620: BQ28Z620 not updating status 04->05 during learning cycle

Part Number: BQ28Z620
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: GPCCHEM

Tool/software:

Hi Ti team,

Could you, please, support me with the battery lerning cycle for BQ28Z620.

I have a conguguration 2S1P with cell ICR18650 2.2Ah 3.7V.
The chemical ID was identify according to the manual of GPCCHEM.
According to the report my Id is 2725

Them i started lerning cucle. However the gauge strogle in updating status to 05 and not updatting correctly FCC, however the DOD0 calculate correctly.

One piont that i wold note is that i want to decrease the voltage of ful charged cell to 4.1V.
Another strage behaviour, is that SoH show 83%, but i conirmet by battery tester and value by DOD0, that my SoH about 100%.

Could you please point me what is going wrong.
I thiead a few times for lerning cycle, here is the las one with discharge current a bit higher that C/10 (320mA) and charge current is about 800mA.

  • Hello Serhii,

Can you send me the datasheet of the battery you are using so I can verify the settings you have in the gg file.

    Regards,

    Adrian

  • Hello Adrian,

    Here is the cells datasheet:

  • Hello Serhii,

Based on the datasheet the battery can be fully charge to 4.2V but in the testing I'm seeing the full charge of 2 cells in series go to 8.2V. We are expecting the voltage to go up to 8.4V. It is important when attempting to complete the learning cycle that the battery is fully charged according to the datasheet of the battery.

    Regards,

    Adrian

  • Hi Adrian, Serhii's colleague here.

The reason behind the 8.2V OCV voltage is the application - we plan to use the battery in a backup application and consider a lower OCV voltage as a measure to extend the battery's life.

In summary, we'd like to clarify the following points:

    1) Do you see any issue with an estimated chemid in a previous setup?

    2) If we're running the learning cycle for the full 8.4V, but planning to charge the pack up to 8.2V - how do we ensure the math will show 100% SoC with an 8.2V OCV? There is a "reserve battery capacity" register for a 0% convergence. Is there a similar setting to ensure 100% convergence and proper system operation?

    Regards, Vasyl.

  • Hello Vasyl,

For the learning cycle you will need to charge up to 8.4V. After completing the learning cycle, you can change the charge terminate parameters so configure the gauge to report at 100% SOC at 8.2V

    Adrian

  • Hello Adrian,

Thatnks so match for the support, in result we lerned the battery succsesfully!
Regarding 8.2V, the full charge voltage was decreased, and we going to check the behaviour.

    Best Regards,
    Serhii
