BQ25188: Shutdown mode entering

Hello.

It isn't quite clear for me whether the BQ25188 can enter Shutdown mode by push button long press with VIN in its operation range. The only picture (Figure 8-12) of entering Shutdown mode by pressing the push button is with Vin = 0V

    Hello Vadim,

    The push button can be used to enter Shutdown mode when it's held for the long press duration, tLPRESS (configured by the MR_LPRESS bits in REG0x8), and when the PB_LPRESS_ACTION bits in REG0x11 are set to 2b11 ("Enable Shutdown mode"). The behavior depends on the state of VIN:

    • If VIN < VIN_PORZ (1.3V typical), Shutdown mode is entered immediately after the long press duration.
    • If VIN > VIN_PORZ, shutdown mode is queued after the long press duration and will be entered when VIN is removed or falls below VIN_PORZ.

    Thanks for following up. I'm glad I could help.

    Yes, a long press can be detected while the battery is charging. Please note that charging will be suspended while the push button is pressed, since the charger will see VTS = GND, which is below the TS HOT threshold.

    Thanks for the explanations. What is about the second part of my question: is the shutdown mode queued after long press were detected during battery charging? Some additional related questions follow:

    1. Will the battery charging resume automatically after the button is released?
    2. Suppose PB_LPRESS_ACTION_1:0= 2b01,
      EN_PUSH = 1,
      MR_RESET_VIN = 0.
      Will a hardware reset start after a long press while the battery is charging?

    Yes, charging will automatically resume after the push button is released, since VTS will rise above the TS HOT (rising) threshold.

    Yes, in this configuration, a hardware reset would occur after a long press. Section 7.3.11 of the BQ25188 datasheet lists the hardware reset sequence. Since the input FET and BATFET are turned off during the hardware reset, there won't be charging during the reset.

    Thanks for following up. Yes, shutdown mode can be queued after a long press during charging, and it will be entered when VIN falls below VIN_PORZ.
