BQ24780S: Smart battery SMBus integration

Part Number: BQ24780S

Tool/software:

Good afternoon,

I am hoping to design a smart battery charging circuit using the BQ24780S. The 4S2P battery pack that I was hoping to use has a SMBus connection, which it uses to provide SOC and charging parameter information to a PCB. The BQ24780S would be used solely for charging the battery pack. As part of the control circuitry, I was hoping to also connect the SMBus to a MCU. This would allow for monitoring of the messages communicated between the battery pack and the BQ24780S. It would also allow the MCU to communicate with the BQ24780S.

The configuration would be something similar to the image below:

My questions are:

- Can the BQ24780S be used in this configuration?

- If it can be used this way, what communication considerations do I require, such that messages over the SMBus are not colliding or interfering with each other?

  • Hello Tomisin,

Yes, the BQ24780S can be used in the configuration you described, where the SMBus is shared between a smart battery, the charger, and a microcontroller. However, to ensure reliable communication without conflicts, you may want to consider using an SMBus multiplexer

    Best Regards,

    Christian.
