TPS25854-Q1: Question about Apple Carplay

Part Number: TPS25854-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25846-Q1, , TPS25830A-Q1, TPS25772-Q1, TPS55289-Q1

Tool/software:

Dear TI experts,

My customer prepare the project of wired USB charging solution for car.

I suggested some parts based on TI's roadmap.

1. In the roadmap, I can see the logo of Apple carplay beside TPS25846-Q1. -> Can I expect that there is no issue along the process of MFI certification like OCP(Over Current Protection)?

2. On the other hand, I cannot see the logo of Apple Carplay beside TPS25854-Q1. It is recommended as USB charging box solution. -> Can I expect that I cannot use it in the position which need MFI certification?

-> If so, Could you suggest other IC which have no problem with MFI certification fo USB charging box?

3. Could you recommend dual USB-C PD solution (single port 45W, dual port 30+30W) for Apple carplay?

Please check this issue. Thanks.

Best regards,

Chase

  • Hi Chase.  Please use TPS25846-Q1 for Type-A port requiring Apple Carplay.  If the design is a Type-C port, use TPS25830A-Q1.  The TPS25854-Q1 does not support USB data, so it is not feasible for CarPlay.

    For USB-PD, I recommend using TPS25772-Q1 + TPS55289-Q1.

  • Dear Eric,

    Thank you for your support.

    1. Actually customer want to use additional USB HUB for Apple carplay. Should I use TPS25846-Q1 for the customer's case although customer use USB hub because of MFI certification?

    2. The customer already tested TPS25772-Q1 + TPS55289-Q1. Does it compatible with Apple carplay including MFI certification?

    Best regards,

    Chase

You can still use TPS25846-Q1 and leverage the BC1.2 CDP functionality incase the hub does not integrate it.

Our PD devices don't play much of a role in CarPlay.  There is no issue with either CarPlay or MFI - both DCDCs can handle the OCP requirement.  Neither IC touches the D+/D- pins when USB data is required.  Here the hub needs to integrate BC1.2 CDP if it is a customer requirement.
