BQ40Z80: Configure gauge to drive fewer than 6 LEDS

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50

Tool/software:

Hi , For our battery application we are using BQ40z80 , and the LEDs are configured for 5 LEDs rather than 6.

We have noticed that after full charge , all 5 LEDs glow but , LED1 and LED3 , blinks at a dim rate as mentioned in the TI post for BQ40z50  [FAQ] How do I configure the gauge to drive fewer than 5 LEDs?  .

Is there a similar solution that can be used for BQ40z80 to drive only 5 LEDs ?

we have set both 5th and 6th LED threshold as 100 % in our present setting

Thanks

  • Hello Av,

This question has been assigned and will be reviewed when possible.

    Thank you,
    Alan

  • Hi Av,

Can you please confirm the voltages being read out from the LED output pins when the blinking occurs? Can you also share a snippet of the LED circuit schematic?

    Regards,

    Anthony

  • Hi Anthony ,

This is the LED circuit snippet

As per this post  [FAQ] How do I configure the gauge to drive fewer than 5 LEDs?  we tried changing the 6th LED threshold to 101% , but that didnt resolve the issue .

What we observed is that without the 6th LED , LED1 and LED3 , blinks at a dim rate , so we tried adding a 6th LED anti parallel to the 5th LED , which resolved the issue of 1st and 3rd LED blinking , it was only the 6th which was blinking in this case.

Attached the videos with and without the 6th LED.

In the attached Videos , red LED is the 6th LED.

Also at what point will 6th LED stop blinking, even after charge end the 6th LED continues to blink. the threshold for 6th LED is set at 100%.

Is there any solution to this issue of LED1 and LED3 dim blink without having to place the 6TH LED .

    Thanks ,

    AV

  • Hi AV,

Taking a look at the EVM schematic, it looks like the orientation of your LED5 is opposite to how this was designed on the EVM, has it already been tried flipping the orientation of LED5 here (with LED6 disconnected)?

    Regards,

    Anthony

  • Hi Anthony ,

Upon cross checking , the orientation of the LEDs is exactly as per the EVM design.

    Thanks ,

    AV

  • We tried flipping the 5th LED without placing the 6th LED , which is basically 6th LED placed and 5th LED removed , as per EVM orientation , the 6th LED was continuously blinking .Attached the video for reference .

    Our Concerns are :

    1) Is there a way to stop the dim blinking of the LED without placing the 6th LED .

    2) How to avoid the blinking of the last LED after charge end for the CHG relax time threshold discharge ( 120 sec ) and keep the last LED solid .(LEDCHG bit enabled in settings)

Here are our LED settings :

    Thanks ,

    AV

  • Hi AV,

Can you please share the full .gg file and a quick log of the gauge registers when this dim blinking is occurring? I want to look into what else is occurring within the gauge at this time.

    Regards,

    Anthony

  • Hi Anthony,

Please find the attached log and Gg.csv file.
