TUSB1046A-DCI: Is it possible to use TUSB1046 without USB PD Controller TPS65987D?

Part Number: TUSB1046A-DCI
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB1046EVM, TPS65987D, TPS25763-Q1, TPS26744E-Q1

Tool/software:

We need a bridge between Display Port and output to type-c monitor.
We don't need USB3 only output to video device with type-c interface.
The question is how necessary is USB PD Controller?
Can TUSB1046 be configured with external resistors?

Power on type-c connector is 5V.

I am attaching the diagram, please give your opinion on how efficient this option is.

  • Hi Ivan,

Yes, a PD controller is needed for DP alt-mode. A PD controller is needed to communicate what the port orientation is, power, and the data lane orientation depending on the type of connection.

Would you know for sure that the only thing being connected to this type-C port would be a monitor? Or would it be possible to connect another device?

    Thanks,

    Ryan

  • Hello, Ryan.
    Thanks for your reply.
We purchased TUSB1046EVM and conducted a series of tests that confirm that without a PD controller, the video device is not detected in the system.
The problem is in the video output device that we connect to the type-c connector.
It seems that the video output device does not start working until an exchange occurs on the CCx bus.
The TUSB1046EVM device has a TPS65987D PD controller.
It does not suit us because it has a very small temperature range of -10 to 75.
Also, this component is Not recommended for new designs.

Please recommend a PD controller with a temperature range of -40 to 85 (125) degrees.

    Thanks

  • Hi Ivan,

It seems that the video output device does not start working until an exchange occurs on the CCx bus.

Correct. The CC lines are used with a PD controller to communicate connection settings and negotiation DP Alt-mode and port configuration. You will need one to support DP alt-mode.

Please recommend a PD controller with a temperature range of -40 to 85 (125) degrees.

Our team does not cover these devices, so I'm not sure what the best recommendation would be. I do see that there is the TPS26744E-Q1 and the TPS25763-Q1 which are both automotive-grade PD controllers that support DP alt-mode, so I would recommend looking at those, or reaching out to the team that covers these devices through E2E and asking for their recommendation.

    Thanks,

    Ryan
