UCC5871-Q1: Parallel the 3 No of IGBT power modules CM1200DW-40T Using the single central gate Driver UCC5871-Q1

Part Number: UCC5871-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC5881-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

Can I connect the UCC5871-Q1 driver IC to drive three parallel IGBT power modules (CM1200DW-40T)?

Each IGBT has an internal gate resistance of 0.63 Ω. Considering a driver gate voltage of 15 V, I require approximately 24 A of gate drive current per IGBT pair.

The UCC5871-Q1 provides 30 A peak current, which is sufficient for driving one module. However, for three parallel modules, we would need an additional ~60 A peak capability in total.

Could you suggest any provisions, such as external buffers, to achieve this peak current requirement for repetitive operation at up to 4 kHz?

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

The can be connected to parallel power modules, however I do want to note that the maximum recommended sustained drive current for the UCC5871-Q1 is 15A. The 30A is is not recommended for consistent usage.

I recommend looking into our latest generation of gate driver, the UCC5881-Q1. In this device we have made significant optimizations and additions, notably the dynamic drive strength feature which allows for further optimizing switching losses and overshoot. In the case of your parallel power modules, I think you may find this feature very interesting.
