TPS25982: The Concept of Temperature Variation in Short-Circuit protection value

Part Number: TPS25982
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25940, TPS2595,

Tool/software:

Dear Specialists,

My customer is considering TPS259827 and has two questions regarding short circuit protection value.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---Questions

1. In the TPS259540 datasheet, page 22, section 8.3.3.3 Short Circuit Protection, the concept of temperature variation in short-circuit protection value is described.

On the other hand, the TPS259827 datasheet does not mention temperature variation in short-circuit protection current.

Would the concept be the same as the TPS25940?
Or would there be no error due to temperature, or would the concept be different?

2. Are there any parameters other than temperature that should be taken into account when considering temperature variation in short-circuit protection value?

---

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi-san,

    1. In the TPS259540 datasheet, page 22, section 8.3.3.3 Short Circuit Protection, the concept of temperature variation in short-circuit protection value is described.

On the other hand, the TPS259827 datasheet does not mention temperature variation in short-circuit protection current.

When the short circuit happens, the device will perform a fast trip and then a current limited startup. In this current limited startup, the device will have much higher power dissipation so it can go into thermal shutdown. This is described in these two datasheets.

Would the concept be the same as the TPS25940?
Or would there be no error due to temperature, or would the concept be different?

The same things apply to TPS2595 also. This is older device so there is slight difference in how fast trip is detected. This doesn't mean that there will be an error in short circuit protection due to temperature. In TPS25982, SCP is performed based on VDS comparator and this TSD is happening after the SCP is performs fast trip.

    2. Are there any parameters other than temperature that should be taken into account when considering temperature variation in short-circuit protection value?

Again, the SCP is not affected here due to temperature.
