UCC28950: High power circuit with DC input

Part Number: UCC28950
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WEBENCH-CIRCUIT-DESIGNER, LM5177, UCC28C42

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am considering the following specifications.
When I checked your website using WEBENCH-CIRCUIT-DESIGNER, I was suggested to configure a circuit using the UCC28950.
I certainly think that the UCC28950 is an effective option for an isolated circuit.
However, I would like your opinion on whether my specifications can be achieved using a non-isolated IC such as the LM5177.
I would like to consider a simpler way to configure it.

(Specifications)
VIN: 16VDC to 60VDC
VOUT: 48V
IOUT: 6.5A (steady state), 9.5A (peak for 5 seconds)
Isolation required

Best regards,

  • Hello,

I reviewed the LM5177 data sheet and itis design for a buck boost controller using an H Bridge and does not use a transformer.  This will not provide isolation.

Your power output is 456 W out.  A phase shifted full bridge will work for this application using a phase shifted full bridge.   However, you could do this design with a two-switch forwarded converter using a UCC28C42.  It is not as complicated as a phase shifted full bridge and uses two primary FETs.

A schematic of two switch forwarded power stage can be found below.

If you are interested in design a two switch forward converter using the UCC28C42 and have any questions, please repost in the e2e with the UCC28C42 in the thread title.  This is so the appropriate applications engineer can help you.

    Regards,
