BQ41Z90: Expansion of balancing capacity

Part Number: BQ41Z90
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Tool/software:

Hello TI Support,

We are currently considering using the BQ41Z90 chip for our new BMS. I have noticed that the chip itself can only balance with 100mA. Unfortunately, the data sheet does not mention any possible current extensions. Our current pack contains an additional circuit board with the ETA3000 IC, which shifts energy via inductance and not via resistance. Is there perhaps a more elegant solution from TI that would allow us to increase the balancing current?

  • Hello,

This question has been assigned and will be reviewed when possible, please attach your .log /.gg files associated with the project.

    Thank you,
    Alan

  • Hi,

The internal cell balancing is limited to 100mA. External Cell balancing is possible with this device.

  • Hello,

@ Alan, sorry, I don't understand what you mean by .log/.gg files?

@ Diego, thank you for describing the possibilities for extending the charging current. I wasn't familiar with the paper, but I am already familiar with the principle. The disadvantage, as described in my question at the beginning, remains the higher power loss. Therefore, an inductive switching solution would be better in order to keep the power loss low at higher currents. As the ETA3000 mentioned above does.

    Philipp

  • Hi,

Both a .log file and .gg file can be generated using BQstudio. A log file contains polls the registers over time. a .gg file contains all the parameters values on the gauge. This is not necessary to solve the cell balancing problem.

I am not familiar with the ETA3000 device, but a quick look at the datasheet, we do not have a comparable solution.

    Regards,

    Diego
