BQ25630: BQ25630 can covrage battery gauge function and how to support shipping mode?

Tool/software:

we are now hava an application which need an charger ic which can charge 18650 re-chargable battery thur USB-C charger,
Seems BQ25630 is right solution, but we want to address below information:

1. BQ25630 has i2c IF to connect HOST, whiat information can be reported from 25630? battery capacity? ( % )

2. BQ25630 support "shipping mode", right? how to implement ? need an extra ( addred ) MOSFET? or just need to type command thur i2c bus?

3. Does BQ25630 can covrage Battery Gauge function? ( seems 25630 has i2c to connect to CPU and support NTC/ JEITA)

my queston is, if BQ25630 can play charger and Gauge function if we only need basic functions?

Hi Steven,

Please see my comments below.

1) The BQ25630 has various status outputs, such as charge status and NTC/JEITA status, in addition to a built in ADC which can measure values such as VBAT, IBAT, VBUS, IBUS, IC temperature etc. With that said it is not a battery gauge device and therefore cannot report battery capacity.

2) Ship mode entry is implemented via I2C control. No extra hardware is required.

3) The BQ25630 does not cover battery gauge function. Although with the built in ADC function you can implement crude battery gauging via host control, but the ADC is not spec'd for high accuracy. If high accuracy gauging is required then I recommend use of a gauge IC.

thanks for the reply, another questions, the output pin (SW) is adjustable? ( ex: 5V)

and will keep stable and can be system power source? please see attached pic.

Hi Steven,

The SYS output pin (which is output of buck converter) can have its minimum regulation voltage adjusted via I2C configuration. The maximum allowable minimum system voltage setting is 4V.

It cannot be set to a specific voltage at all times because as battery voltage increase to full charge SYS also increases with it. The below FAQ I have linked below has more information on expected SYS regulation in different operating conditions. It is for a different IC part number, but the same principle applies for the BQ25630.
