LM2940-N: Heating issue of LM2940IMP-5.0/NOPB

Hi team,

I am using LM2940IMP-5.0/NOPB regulator in my gate driver circuit design to step down from 24V-5V. During testing, I observed significant heating and therefore reduced the input voltage to 12V for evaluation. Below are the details:

* Test input: 12V-5V

* At no load, regulator temperature rises to ~45-50 deg C within 5-7 minutes.

* With single IGBT connected, load current is 310mA and the regulator temperature rises to ~85 deg C

* Observation on pulses: At 24V input, regulator generates 5V but the gatedrive output pulses (driving the IGBT gate) are irregular (not continuous). When input is reduced to 12 V, the pulses become clean and continuous.

*Package: SOT-223

The rating of the regulator is 1 A, kindly help me in analysing why the regulator is getting heating up.
