LP2951-Q1: Junction Temperature and Power Dissipation too high

Part Number: LP2951-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi,

in the Datasheet of the LP2951-33-Q1 the formula for power dissipation is PD = (VIN – VOUT) × IOUT and the Formula for the Junction Temperature is TJ = TA + (RθJA × PD).

With VIN=17V, VOUT=5V, IOUT=80mA and TA=120°C the LDO should be in the specified operating conditions. But with the mentioned formulas i calculate a junction temeperature of 166°C. This would destroy the component. Is this calculation correct or is it faulty and the Duty cycle or something else should be considered?

  • Hi Bjarne,

Power dissipation in the LDO, combined with the ambient temperature and junction-to-ambient thermal resistance places an additional constraint on the specified operating conditions to avoid exceeding the maximum junction temperature for the LDO.

    Best Regards,
