LM5149: Application of GaN transistors in DC/DC converters

Part Number: LM5149
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5148, LM5148-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello,

can LM5149 at HO+LO pins drive GaN transistors? Hence, the gate source voltage is maximum +5V?

  • Hi Stephen,

Take a look at this ref design: https://www.ti.com/tool/PMP31349. This link is given in the LM5148-Q1 product folder, but also applies here (the LM5149 is just the LM5148 + AEF).

Were you thinking of driving GaN FETs directly or using discrete GaN + external driver or integrated GaN + driver? Note if the SW pin is grounded (as is typically the case with external drivers), you need to operate in FPWM.

    Regards,

    Tim

  • Hi Tim,

thanks for your reply. I was thinking of directly driving discrete GaN solutions (e.g. by Infineon) without an additional particular driver. Do you have an experiences in that case?

    Regards,

    Stephan

  • This would be similar to our LMG2100 family of GaN devices, where the driver is integrated with the GaN FETs. The SW pin of the controller is then tied to GND (as the gate drive inputs of the GaN FETs are ground referenced) – in which case FPWM is the only possible operating mode.

    Tim
