TPS536C7: Max current

Part Number: TPS536C7

Tool/software:

Hi,

What is the maximum current supported by the TPS536C7B1 ?

I understand that the main limitation is the power stage in itself, but are there any other limitations ?

For instance, I see that the maximum over current protection is 1024 A.
Also on the telemetry side, I see that the max current that can be read is 70A x 12 = 840A.

If we use a power stage that can handle the current, can the TPS handle 1000A ?
If not, why ?
Are there any limitations on the regulation loop side ?

Any feature of the TPS not available at such a high current ?

Thanks.

Regards,

Eliot

  • Hi Eliot,

For a single TPS536C7 or any controller for that matter, there are some limitations. In regards to specifically TPS536C7, the maximum output current value before overcurrent fault protection engages is set to 1023 since the register simply doesn't have any more bits.

For applications above 1000A, some systems use two TPS536xx controllers controllers powering the same compute device, allowing for higher current delivery than one controller can allow on its own.

You are correct, largely the limitations for high power delivery are on the powerstages. As of writing, most powerstages in the market cannot continuously support above 60 or 70A without very robust cooling systems to pull the heat from the PS.

We are working on the future devices that solve some of these limitations. If you'd like we can discuss these away from a public forum via email. Just let me know and I can set that up for us.

    Kind regards,
    Nick Z
