BQ51013A: Simple WPT receptio

Part Number: BQ51013A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00318, BQ25100, BQ51003, BQ500212A, BQ51013C

Tool/software:

Currently we have a wearable device that uses 2 pogo pins to charge. I would like to replace that with a wireless solution.

  1. Battery Charging already established (npm1300)
  2. space constrained
  3. small footprint and low component count
  4. The Wurth Elektronik 7603081012110mm coil is dimensionally suitable
  5. charge rate is 0.25C, 20mA
  6. housing will probably be ~2mm of plastic thick (the minimum between coil and transmitter)
  7. 4v0-5v5 input from the receiver will be fed to VBUSIN on a Nordic nPM1300 PMIC (battery charger).
  8. I would like to use OTS WPT transmitter. I don't want to dev the primary too.

I believe BQ51013A might be right, but have learned it's best to ask first! Slight smile  Thanks for you help with this!

  • Hello

Take a look at TI Reference design TIDA-00318.

This is a small form factor charger solution.  It uses the BQ51003 wireless power receiver and BQ25100 battery charger.

Good starting point for possible design.

  • This is perfect! thanks!

Reference design TIDA-00318 uses BQ51003 with the secondary coil. BQ51003 is Active so I am happy to use it, but is that the newest, best, version to use? I can't tell if BQ51013A is any better or different. For the BQ51003 type of application what chip is currently recommended?

Reference design TIDA-00318 specifies bq500212A as the transmitter controller, but this part is NRND. Every alternative I investigated is also NRND... What would you recommend to replace bq500212A?

  • Hi Michael,

BQ51013C is our newest wireless receiver IC, but it is a different package type compared to BQ51003 and therefore has a larger footprint. As Bill previously mentioned BQ51003 and BQ25100 is our recommended small form factor solution.

What would you recommend to replace bq500212A?

The BQ500212A is still available with no plans to End of Life (EOL) and we do not have a replacement for it. The part is listed as NRND because it is not Qi-certified to the newest version of the protocol, but if that is not a concern to you it is acceptable transmitter controller to use.

    Best Regards,

    Garrett

  • This looks great. Thanks.

    1. BQ500212A is Qi-certified, but just not the latest Qi-cert?
    2. BQ500212A 1K-10K quantity/yr, 3 years won't be a problem?
    3. are Altium reference Sch and PCB files available? I found PDF's of files in https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-00318#design-products, but that requires me recreating existing Layout Guidelines work.
    4. are there eval kits for both?
