TPSM63603: Cannot create design (Vin24V, Vout15V and 3A)

Part Number: TPSM63603
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPSM63604

Tool/software:

Dear Specialists,

My customer is considering TPSM63603S and has a question.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---

In WEBENCH® POWER DESIGNER, I entered the following condition.
Input: DC 21.6 V - 26.4 V
Output: 15 V at 3 A
Temperature: 30 °C

When I chose Module from the results, the TPSM63603 (3 A) does not appear.
The TPSM63604 (4 A) appears, but does this require a 4 A part?

Could you please let me know why the TPSM63603 does not appear?

---

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hello Shinichi,

    Thanks for the query.

The TPSM63603 is not appearing in WEBENCH® POWER DESIGNER because if you put your conditions on the TPSM63603 model on WEBENCH® POWER DESIGNER, it shows that the junction temperature has exceeded.

Whereas for the 4A variant it is well within the limits.

I will verify the WEBENCH® POWER DESIGNER results on EVM and get back to you.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Sourish Nandy.

  • Hi Sourrish,

    Thank you for your reply.

I could not find the error message.

Could you please let me know how to confirm?

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

If you go to the TPSM63603 product page and open the WEBENCH® POWER DESIGNER from there and then input your necessary conditions, then this error message shows up.

It says the Max Junction Temperature exceeded.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Sourish Nandy.

  • Hi Sourish,

    Thank you for your reply.

No error message appeared when I did it the way you described.

On the other hand, I entered the input and output conditions under which the TPSM63603 can be used (21.6V to 26.4V, 15Vout1.5A), and the screen allowing me to simulate the TPSM63603 appeared.
Then I set the current value to 3A, and the error message appeared.

Is this the correct way to do it?

If so, I'll share this information with the customer.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

Yes, when you go to the WebBench and input your conditions, the design update fails.

The way you did it is correct.

You can share this result with your customer.

    Glad to be of help.

Kindly click resolved if issue is resolved.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Sourish Nandy.

  • Hi Shinichi,

I checked the TPSM63603 on the EVM at the given conditions on the WEBENCH.

    The Conditions are: Vin=26.4V, Vout=15.2V, Fsw=2MHz, Temp= room temperature, Iout=3A.

The Iin=1.82A, the efficiency is over 94%.

According to the R_thetha_j of the EVM, the temperature should rise 80 degree Celsius over the ambient temperature which is well below the 150 degree limit.

If the customer's board's R_thetha_j is worse, then it may hit the max temperature limit.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Sourish Nandy.

  • Hi Shinichi,

I am attaching the thermal image of the above test done on EVM.

It can be seen that the IC temperature rises to around 100 degrees Celsius which is very close to our calculations.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Sourish Nandy.
