TPS2660: Surge Current Cause to Restart

Hi Team,

Customer use TPS2660 with an super capacitor application, 3mF Cload, so the surge current will exceed the maximum value that the OCP can be set to, causing the device to repeatedly restart.

2.23A/2.21A is not enough, customer needs 3A OCP(rated current 1.5A) after evaluation.

Do you have any suggestions for such application?

Add soft-start circuit? Resistor.
Whether OCP can be disable in the start-up state?
Whether OCP can be set 3A, exceed the recommend value?
Or this device is not suitable for super capacitor application? Any other choices here?

What's the differences between TPS2660 and TPS2663?

And whether customer can use a lower Rilim to configure the OCP? Like 3kohm?

TPS2663 is 60V/6A device, and it has fast fault recovery feature which helps in passing surge requirement in criteria-A.

You can check datasheet and EVM user guide of TPS2663 for more details.

Hi Amrit,

We tried to use this efuse for 48V output. When we connect one 2.2mF or one 1.5A constant current source, we can find proper soft startup capacitor to make the efuse work. However, when we connect one 2.2mF and 1.5A constant current source, we cannot find proper soft startup capacitor to start the efuse. It looks like it triggered the thermal shutdown during the startup in this case. I doubt even we change TPS2660 to TPS2630, we will get the same issue.

Please provide your suggestion.
