BQ34Z100-R2: Appropriate value for Sleep Current

Part Number: BQ34Z100-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25798

Tool/software:

Dear Sirs and Madams,

Please tell us the appropriate value for the sleep current to set on the BQ34Z100-R2.

When the BQ25798 battery charger enables Ship Mode or Shutdown mode, the battery line continues to draw current on the order of several microamperes.

In this case, is it recommended that I put the BQ34Z100-R2 into SLEEP mode or FULL_SLEEP mode?

Are there any regulations regarding the minimum current that should be set in SLEEP mode and FULL_SLEEP mode?

For example, if it is difficult to set the sleep current below 100uA, please let us know.

Regards,

Masashi

  • Hello,

This question has been assigned and will be followed up when possible.

    Thank you,
    Alan

  • If you require the smallest possible supply current, then use FULL_SLEEP. This will have an impact on gauging accuracy (as the gauge will be effectively off and will miss any discharge or charge currents if you don't wake it up in time).

Otherwise use SLEEP. The current threshold depends on your application. I would set it to a value < C/100.

  • Hi Dominik,

In your answer, you said, "This will have an impact on gauging accuracy (as the gauge will be effectively off and will miss any discharge or charge currents if you don't wake it up in time)."

Does this mean, in effect, that even if the battery voltage drops due to self-discharge or other reasons when the BQ34Z100-R2 is in FULL_SLEEP mode and is in an ultra-low current state for an extended period of time (assuming storage in a warehouse for six months or more), the remaining battery charge will not be reflected in the SOC register?

In that case, when returning from FULL_SLEEP mode to SLEEP mode or NORMAL mode, will the battery voltage and current values be reacquired and the SOC register updated to the correct values reflecting the voltage at that time?

    Regards,

    Masashi
