UCC15241-Q1: Can the UCC15241 be operated at 12V Vout?

Part Number: UCC15241-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC15240-Q1, UCC14130-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello,

I need to design a low power (~1.5W) 24V to 12V isolated DC-DC converter. I know that the UCC15241 IC can be configured in single supply mode, but the minimum output voltage specified in the datasheet from VDD to VEE is 15V. I understand that this IC is primarily used to power the secondary side of isolated gate drivers where a VDD-VEE of less than 15V generally isn't used, but I just wanted to know what would happen if I tried to use the UCC15241 as a general purpose isolated DCDC in single supply mode designed to operate at 12V Vout? Will the DCDC just not work?

  • Prathik,

15V is too low for UCC15240-Q1. Input voltage and temperature determine maximum output power but also, the transformer turns ratio is a limiting factor. When you try for 24V-to-15V, you will be at/near the duty cycle limit, the output voltage will not be able to regulate, the UCC15240 will shut down. If you can operate from VIN=12V, then UCC14130-Q1 configured as 12V-to-12V would be your best option.

    Regards,

    Steve

  • Thank you for your response, Steve. I have the flexibility of adjusting the input voltage to the UCC15241, to (say) 22V, since there is a non-isolated pre-regulator. Would 22V-15V conversion work, and is there any way I can calculate the duty cycle or determine if the IC can maintain regulation for a given input and output voltage?

  • Prathik,

Unfortunately lowering the input voltage isn't going to help in this situation. The UCC15240-Q1 isn't designed to accommodate for such a low output voltage. Here are the minimum and maximum specs from the datasheet:

Unfortunately, you won't be able to output 12V with this device.

    Regards,
