UCC14141-Q1: What is are the risks associated with operating the UCC14141 outside the SOA?

Part Number: UCC14141-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello,

I have an application when I need an isolated DC-DC converter for 15V - 12V conversion at an output power of ~1.5W. With a 10% safety factor, that becomes 1.65W. As per the datasheet of the UCC14141, at an ambient temperature of 75oC (which is the max ambient temp in my application), the IC can output upto 2W. However, that is outside the marked SOA. I want to know what the risks associated with operating outside the SOA are?

  • Like asking what are the risks of driving 100MPH when the speed limit is 65MPH...you might get away with it but no guarantees. Operating within the SOA assures the performance of the IC can meet the specifications published in the data sheet. The 2W output power you are referring to is outside the 1.5W SOA and is peak power capability but not rated for continuous steady state 2W power capability.
