Can I get an updated response to this same question? I would think there is no issue with using a ceramic instead of tantalum for decoupling caps.

    Hi Julia,

    Using a ceramic output capacitor on the REG1117 should be acceptable, as the datasheet notes that capacitor ESR should be less than 0.5Ω, which is nearly guaranteed with modern ceramic capacitors.
