BQ76952: Selecting a 3–4S LFP gauge + protector IC compatible with external active balancing (e.g. MPS2643)

Part Number: BQ76952
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100-G1, , BQ40Z50-R2

Tool/software:

Hi TI team,

We’re developing a compact 3–4 cell LiFePO₄ (LFP) pack intended for long service life and high reliability. The pack will include a small host MCU for supervisory logic, cell-swap detection, and data logging.

At the pack level, we’re evaluating BMS/gauge IC options that can provide:

3–4 S cell monitoring and protection (OV, UV, OCD, SCD).

Fuel gauging for LFP chemistry.

Ability to interface cleanly with an external active-balancing stage (for example, an inductive transfer circuit such as MPS MP2643 or similar).

Low quiescent current in standby or ship mode (<150 µA if possible).

A few questions:

Which TI gauge / protector combination would you recommend for this cell count and chemistry (e.g. BQ40Z50-R2, BQ76952 + BQ34Z100-G1, etc.)?

Do any of these devices support or coordinate with external active-balancing circuits, or must the MCU disable the pack’s passive balancing while the external circuit operates?

Are there recommended design notes or reference schematics showing integration of active balancing with TI monitors?

We’ll handle cell-swap management and MCU control logic ourselves, but want to ensure the selected TI device won’t conflict with an external balancer on the sense lines or during ADC sampling.

Thanks for your time and any pointers you can share!
