TPS25821: Query for Tps25821 pin positive source current

Part Number: TPS25821

Tool/software:

Hi Team

My customer is using this device in their adapter application. this is a new ee for me, so I am not very clear for the pin positive source current spec.

Customer said they needed this Abs value for derating test. Can you help to provide the data? or how I should understand this data, and what does that mean of internally limited?

  • Hi Harry,
The absolute data is in the table you attached. "Positive" is indicating the direction. You can treat positive source as source from chip and positive sink as being sinked by the chip.

"Internally limited" means the value is limit by the silicon and you can not always set the number as you want. For example for Vin you can set as high as you want ignoring the device, but for the I_out unlimited high even you short it to GND.

  • Hi Ke

Thanks for your support. what's limited value of this item? customer wants to test and understand the limitation of sourcing capability.

  • Hi Harry,

I don't fully following the question. Since the OUT driving capability is listed in the table, is the customer trying to test the signal pins source capability? May I know what's the reason behind it?

    BR,

    Ke

  • Hi Ke

Yes, The table shows the limited current point is 1.7A . The internal limitation is achieved by the integrated Mosfet?  What they want to understand is the Mosfet's limitation——SOA. the reason they want to get this is one of process is test the ABS value performance when customer qualify a new device in their AVL

  • Hi Ke

BTW,  I think we can use the Isc for stress measurement during the steady states.

    ...

But what's the maximum value that the device can withstand in this picture in short condition?  I think it is related with the Mos's capability.

Is the internal Isc adjustable by external components?

  • Hi Harry,

It's more about thermal. With a shorter tios usually you can get a higher I_peak tolerated. So there's no accurate answer for your question.

    Isc is not adjustable.

Please also check "7.3.2 Current Capability Advertisement and VBUS Overload Protection", I may suggest using 1.67A rather than 1.7A.
