TPS55165-Q1: Question about input and output ceramic capacitors (MCC)

Part Number: TPS55165-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS55165Q1-EVM

Tool/software:

The input and output capacitors of the TPS55165Q1-EVM evaluation board are 5570 size capacitors.
1. Generally, the reduction in effective capacitance due to the DC bias characteristics of an MCC seems to have a greater impact the smaller the size, but is the 5750 size of the evaluation board a result of taking effective capacitance into consideration?
2. I would like to keep the mounting area as small as possible. Will this be a problem as long as the effective capacitance and rated voltage are secured?

  • Hi,

Thank you for reaching out. I think in TPS55165 EVM board, the Cin Cout choice considers effective capacitance, ESR, and the automotive grade. There is no size limitation in EVM board.

Recently we have small size automotive MLCC with high performance. As long as the effective capacitance, ESR and rated voltage are secured, and the transient performance is satisfied, there is no need to use 5570 size.

    Regards,

    Mulin
