BQ35100: BQ35100 EOS mode for LiSoCL2 pack

Hi,

While seraching for a method to measure the state of charge of my LiSoCL2 battery pack (3 in parallel Saft LSH20) I found the BQ35100, which seems suitable for the job. I just have a few question before proceeding with the HW for it:

1. In the datasheet is recommended to use the EOS mode for this battery kind. While In this mode can I still figure out the percentage left on the battery pack? My use case would be to report every 8 hours the battery state
2. The three battery in parallel gives me 39 Ah capacity, is this ok for the BQ35100 ?
3. Any other thing I need to have in consideration ?

Hi,

1) The TRM describes the different gauging modes. For LiSOCl2 you should use EOS mode, this mode does not output an soc%.

2) this is ok

1) So I dont have a way to know the battery remaining in a LiSOCl2 pack ? I would just get a warning when the battery is low ?

How this product competes with the MAX17201 for example ? MAX17201 seems to be able to give the battery percentage, but I would like to know from your side if you have a comparison between the two products.

Hi,

1) This is correct

I am not familiar with these products. But I do know for LiSOCl2, the voltage curve is very flat, EOS mode will help compensate for that. You can use Accumulator mode if desired, but this will only track the coulombs leaving and entering the battery.

Hi,

Accumulator mode will work to gauge LiSOCl2 cells, there will just be a large amount of power consumed due to the nature of this mode.

Thanks again! Can you clarify please ? I checked the datasheet and the consumption difference doesn't seem big. Or what you are saying is that in Accumulator mode more readings are needed thus the consumption is higher ?

Hi,

The gauge does not need to remain on in EOS mode. In accumulator mode the GE pin needs to be enabled the entire time.

In accumulator mode the gauge will coulomb count when the GE pin is asseted. In EOS mode the gauge will update the measuredZ.
