TPS51200 getting very hot

I used the TPS51200 two years before in an application as DDR2 Termination Voltage controller. It worked, but it was very hot and I decided to use another solution in a redesign.

I now find again a TPS51200 in a TI EVM example schematic and think about using the TPS51200 again (now DDR3 Vtt with 0.75V), because it is a very small solution.

Can anybody tell me if it is normal that the controller gets very hot? I used it as it was suggested in the data sheet (Vin=3.3V, Vtt=0.9V, Refin=1.8V).

Can you perhaps suggest a better solution than TPS51200 (small solution which does not get hot)?

    I don't think it is normal that the controller gets very hot. How hot is the controller and how much current for VTT terminal? Please refer to the thermal design in the datasheet to calculate the power dissipation. My EVM run at 3.3Vin, VDDQ=VLDOIN=1.8V, VTT=VTTREF=0.9V, Ivtt=+/-1.2A Sink/source current transient, 28C amb without airflow. TPS51200 is around 47C. Another thing I would like to mention that we recommend 3x10uF ceramic output capacitor for VTT terminal.These three caps should be lower ESR and close to VTT pin. Higher ESR VTT cap or VTT trace parasitic inductance might cause gain peaking and controller oscillation. The oscillation will make controller hot. TPS51200 is perfect for DDR3 application. Now we have new DDR controller TPS51206. Please review the datasheet and EVM user's guide for performance in TI website.
