1KΩ resistor on bq2700/27200 VCC pins

Hi,

I would like to ask a question about bq27200 and bq27200.

In example circuits on the datasheet, [pin 2, VCC] is connected to PACK+ in both examples via a 1KΩ resistor. Why this is necessary? And if without the 1KΩ resistor would bq27000/27200 still be able to drain an appropriate amount of current from the source by itself?
