bq78PL116 with 200A

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76PL536, BQ78PL116

Dear Friends,

Hi!

I want to design a BMS for a 300V and 200A  DC system. I have 12 battery packs and for each pack one BMS.(each pack = 16 Li-Ion cell )

  • Can I use bq78PL116 for each BMS instead of bq76PL536?
  • Is it possible to use MOSFET in precharge and protection circuits at 200A?

Thank you for your help.

Best Wishes,

  • Joe,

The PL116 devices are not designed to be stacked to support cell counts greater than 16. The PL536 would be our best option to support this type of application. I am not clear as to what you are asking with the precharge and protection circuits at 200A. If you are referring to the devices used on our EVM, then they will need to be resized to support more current. They are setup for about 10A or 11A. We do use a pre-FET driver circuit on the schematic, so you can add additional power FETs in parallel to support higher currents and the pre-FET drivers will handle the additional gate drive load requirement.

  • hi thomas

thanks for the quick reply.i have another question how can i change the other Mosfet (Q3 and Q4) to switch the Power mosfet Q12and Q11.

    Regards,

  • Joe,

Are you referring to our PL116 EVM? Q3 and Q4 are pre-Fet driver stages, but Q11 and Q12 are in the cell balancing section. I do not think that Q3 and Q4 will have to be resized to support power FETs in parallel with Q13 and Q15. Please clarify your question, if this does not answer it.

  • hi Tom

im reffering to BQ78Pl116. In Pl116 datasheet page 23 you can find out that Q12 and Q11 supply only 100V .thr problem is when i use power FETs in parallel to Q12 and Q11 i schuld resized  because they kann not support 300V .  schould i also  resize Q5 und Q6 Jfet and (q3 & q4) pre FETS ?

And still have a question you might have at TI such power MOSFETS ? Do you have any suggestion?

  • Joe,

Q3 and Q4 would have to be resized to support the 300V. Q5 and Q6 should be okay, since Z3 and Z4 prevents the voltage across them to exceed their specifications.Ti does not have any MOSFETs in our portfolio that can support this voltage range.
