PWM Dimming of LEDS (LM3914 -- Dot/Bar Display Driver)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3914

Has anyone tried using PWM dimming of LEDs driven by the LM3914?  The part allows you to set the LED current (and hence adjust it) but LED's don't always have consistent color rendition over a range of currents.  I was considering PWM'ing the LED supply to achieve dimming but I wasn't sure how the open collector outputs of the LM3914 would respond to that kind of treatment.  On page 9 of the data sheet, 2nd column, 3rd paragraph has a few words about internal circuits detecting when collectors go into saturation and adding a 2.2 uF by-pass cap (which of course just defeats the PWM anyways).
