Iout bq24040

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24040

Hi, I've some question about the specification of the bq24040 (http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/bq24040.pdf).

- Page 4 : Iout : 10mA to 800mA; on the same page are presented the KIset factor from 10 to 800mA.

- Page 7 : Range is 10.8k (50mA) to 675 Ω (800mA).

Which one is true? minumin fast charge current is 10mA or 50mA?

  • Yes it is a little confusing since there is more to it other than just the fast charge (CC) current.  Typically termination is set at 10% of CC, so in this case 50mA (CC) with 5mA termination is the lower limit.  The actual answer is that as the current is reduced the monitoring accuracy decays so around 5mA it gets fairly loose tolerance, so this is set as the minimum charge curent at any time, which corresponds to the lowest termination current recommended......fast charge being typically 10 times higher gives the 50mA (CC).  With that said, one can set the fast charge (CC) to 10mA with a 50% termination still staying above 5mA on the termination, but with a 10mA fast charge.

It is all about accuracy when operating at low currents and what is acceptable.

  • Thanks for the reply,

I'm not sure to understand the whole problem. In fact what is important and to be considered as the limit is the "Termination current" which should not be lower thant 5mA (where could I find this value on datasheet?).

If this parameter is respected the Iout (CC) range goes from 10 to 800mA, but the ratio fast charge/termination is different.

For example with a maximum fast charge current of 65mA, the termination should not be lower than 5mA, let's say 10% of fast charge. Is it ok to put a 2k resistor, or let the "preterm" pin in High Z, as it is the default value?

The system consumption during charge is only a few uA (MSP430 and some other drivers).

  • The lowest Kfactor range in the data sheet is 10mA, this aligns with the maximum termination threshold of 50% so if the CC is set to 10mA then the termination should be set to 50% or 5mA.

The bottom line is that the sense capability of the IC gets worse as the pass and sense FET near cut off and 5mA charge current just prior to termination is around 10uA through the sense FET.

  • Thanks a lot, I finally understood this point;)
