TPS2350 / PIN 11 (GAT) SOURCE CURRENT

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2350

Hi,

One of our customers would like to use the TPS2350 with a FET rated to 12V.

As Pin 11, the gate pin on the controller has a maximum rating in the data sheet of 17V, they want to protect the FET by a use of a zener diode or other. In order to do so they need to know what is the source current capability of this pin.

If you have any other recommendations of safe FET operation it will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ran

  • The gate source current is 50uA. The GATA/B fets are less stressed than the output fet but be careful with lowering the gate voltage as this increases the RDSON. For the output FET, look to the safe operating area(SOA) curve in the FET datasheet. It must be able to withstand the current and voltage of the current ramp for the time it takes to charge the capacitor. Consider also the re-try on short circuit heating the FET even for a short duration. Their is a tool to help select components for the TPS2350 on the product page. The tool results are a starting point, expect some prototype trimming.
