bqEVSW 0.9.88 has no bqEASY button

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27541, BQEVSW, BQ27541-G1, BQ27541-V200

I want to try the bq27541 with the new G1 version (V2.22 chem file)

At the bqEVSW  version 0.9.88 there is no bqEASY button on the left side.

Can you check it and tell me the result?

  • Hi Martin,

bq27541-G1 firmware (v2.22 SENC file) is released to ti.com in a preview mode.  The IC will officially be released and orderable within a few weeks.  At this moment the datasheet is online along with a change-list describing what is new.

The new EVSW installer online supports all bq275xx gauges, including bq27541-G1.  As you noticed, there is no bqEASY tab in bq27541-G1 EVSW.

We removed bqEASY from bq27541-G1 EVSW because it was not compatible.  Instead, we are working on a new, improved tool called bqCONFIG that should be ready also within a few weeks.  How can you create a golden file without bqEASY, right?

First, instead of using the questions in bqEASY to configure dataflash parameters you can simply directly modify them in the Dataflash tab.  Click on the number you want to modify, type in the new number, then hit the ENTER key to actually write it to dataflash.  You can also use File->Export to save your settings to a gg file, edit the gg file in Notepad, then use File->Import and click Write All to update the dataflash parameters.  We are working on a new application note describing all of the new dataflash parameters introduced in bq27541-G1, but for the old parameters you can still use SLUA561 (Configuring the bq27541-V200 Data Flash (Rev. B))   Any new features you don’t understand can be left at default settings for now.

Next, calibration can also be done as usual using the Calibration tab in EVSW.  The section in bqEASY for Calibration simply directed you to perform calibration with the other tab.

Third, you need to change the chemistry information in dataflash to match your chemID.  This chemistry information is in hidden dataflash locations and is not visible in your gg file (except for the chemID number).  Since you don't have bqEASY or bqCONFIG to program your chemID, for now you can post a request here with your desired chemID and we will post a SENC file with the chemID programmed for you.

Fourth, you need to perform your learning cycle and create a golden file.  If you already performed your learning cycle using bq27541-V200 you don't need to repeat it if you are using the same chemID.  You can just copy the Qmax values and Ra table values from the old (V200) gg file to your new G1 gg file.  If you are starting from scratch, you can perform a learning cycle manually.  bqEASY simply walked you through the process and had some nice buttons to click as checkmarks, but you can easily do it yourself.  Following this application note will help: SLUA597: Achieving the Successful Learning Cycle

    • Performing the learning cycle and creating a golden file manually:
    • Discharge the battery to empty
    • Relax it for at least 5 hours
    • Start Logging in DataRAM screen so you can analyze if anything goes wrong.  Start AutoExport of gg files in DataFlash screen, about every 10 minutes.
    • Send the IT_ENABLE command (click in the Value column next to Control on the DataRAM screen, type 21, then hit the Enter key)
      • Refresh the screen and confirm that VOK and QEN bits are green in Control Status
      • Update Status will now have changed from 00 to 04 in Dataflash
      • Charge battery to full and relax it for at least 2 hours
        • Confirm that Update Status has changed from 04 to 05 in Dataflash
        • Discharge at about C/5 rate (at least C/10) until empty
        • Relax at least 5 hours or until Update Status has changed from 05 to 06 in Dataflash
        • Your learning cycle is complete.  Use File->Export in Dataflash or one of the autoexported gg files and edit it to a golden state.
          • Change Update Status from 06 to 02.  This disabled Impedance Track but still indicates that the values are learned or “golden”.
            • You will usually send the IT_ENABLE command in production before you ship the pack, which will change Update Status back to 06.
    • Change any other desired dataflash to “time-zero” settings.  For example, reset counters and Delta Voltage should be set to 0.  Avg I Last Run and Avg P Last Run should be set to a typical system load since those will be used for initial gauge predictions until they are dynamically updated in the field.
    • Reload the edited golden gg to your IC by using File->Import and then clicking Write All on the DataFlash screen.
    • Close bq27541-G1 EVSW.  Unplug bq27541EVM or other board you are using.
    • Restart EVSW.  Manually choose bq27541-V200 EVSW from the list.
    • Plug in bq27541EVM.  Click Refresh to confirm communication is still okay.  You will get warnings using this EVSW since it is expecting bq27541-V200 but you are using bq27541-G1.
    • Go to the bqEASY tab.  You will get warnings using this EVSW since it is expecting bq27541-V200 but you are using bq27541-G1.
    • Jump to step 3F and click Read DFI.
      • The file will get stored to C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\bq Evaluation Software\Plugins\Projects.  Retrieve the file and rename it.
      • Do NOT use any other section of bq27541-V200 bqEASY or EVSW while you are talking to a bq27541-G1 device.  The DFI files are okay because they are simply binary images.
      • Use step 1B if you want to program that DFI into other boards.
      • Close EVSW and restart to autoload the bq27541-G1 EVSW.
      • Use the I2C Pro screen to read out your golden SENC file, if desired.

I hope this helps.  We apologize for the inconvenience while we prepare the new tool.  In the meantime, let us know if you have any trouble with the procedure and we will be glad to help out.

  • That is very clear and helpful. Thanks, David

  • Hello, thank you for your very helpful answer!

A Battery of us is measured just in TI.

But in the meantime, it would be good to have a senc file in advance with the chem ID No. 416.

  • Hello,

do you have seen my last post?

Is it possible to make this senc file?

    Best regards Martin

Please find a bq27541-G1 v2.22 SENC file attached with chemID 416 preprogrammed.

  • Hello,

Now we have the Version 0.9.90 but the bqEASY button is also not avalable. If a need a new DFI File, what is the action now? I must change the chemestry for a new cell. If e need a hole *.sec file, too?

    By Lutz

  • Hi Lutz,

First, let me mention that bq27541-G1 v2.24 is the final released firmware version of the SENC file.

Secondly, please use bqCONFIG instead of bqEASY.  bqCONFIG is a standalone application that you can use to configure the basic dataflash parameters as well as program chemistry.  It also allows you to extract various formats of flash images in the last step, including DFI.

GaugeStudio is another application that you can download to use in place of EVSW.

The v2.24 SENC and bqCONFIG and GaugeStudio can all be downloaded from the bq27541-G1 product folder on ti.com.

  • Hello,

I am a colleague from Lutz and we´ve the same problem. We would like to create a new GG File for BQ27541-G1. We use the latest senc file v2.24.

We installed gauge studio and tried to create the new GG File but that does not work. We can send a manual command to BQ and get an answer. Also we can read and write a new senc file. Unfortunately we cannot read the registers or see more informations from BQ. We used EV2300a with latest driver version from TI. Could it be we have to install an additional program to gauge studio to read all registers and information from BQ?

Where I can download bqConfig? Is it a part of bqesv software?

Many thanks in advace for your help

    Andi

  • bqRASY is also handy for golden image creation because the discharge can be automated. Without it the resting times and final currents for charge/discharge will be non-optimal.

  • Good morning .

While following your instructions, we have some questions. We would like to clarify the procedure. We use a bq27541-G1 chip. We performed a battery training procedure as specified in your manual. Update Status changed value on 06. But there are some further difficulties. In step:

    • Plug in bq27541EVM.  Click Refresh to confirm communication is still okay.  You will get warnings using this EVSW since it is expecting bq27541-V200 but you are using bq27541-G1.

we are faced with the fact that the "warnings using this EVSW since it is expecting bq27541-V200 but you are using bq27541-G1" is not appears. When we try to read gg-file we get a table filled with zero values.

In this regard, I would like to clarify the procedure for the completion of the learning cycle. In particular, could you explain in detail as much as possible the following items:

    • Your learning cycle is complete.  Use File->Export in Dataflash or one of the autoexported gg files and edit it to a golden state.
    • Change Update Status from 06 to 02.  This disabled Impedance Track but still indicates that the values are learned or “golden”.
    • You will usually send the IT_ENABLE command in production before you ship the pack, which will change Update Status back to 06.

Separately, I ask whether an affect on chip performance, if I skip the last step («You will usually send the IT_ENABLE command in production before you ship the pack, which will change Update Status back to 06»)? Is it possible to describe it in detail?

    Regards.
