Maximum Current from Programmable Maximum Power Point Tracking Controller for Photovoltaic Solar Panels SM72442

Hello All,

I am a student and using Programmable Maximum Power Point Tracking Controller for Photovoltaic Solar Panels SM72442 for one of my projects. My objective is to make a  MPPT based solar charger capable of delivering 12/24 Volt  and 50 Ampere. I have following questions:

Question 01 : For what maximum output current  SM72442 can be used?

Question 02 : If  SM72442 cannot  be used for above rating then is there any other solution provided by TI or any other Manufacturer?

  • A device like the SM72442 provides gate drive to power FETs, it does not handle the load current directly.  For a complete 50A design, you will need to select the power FETs, bus capacitors, etc. to meet your output requirements.

    If I am not wrong then you are talking about the H-Bridge Driver given in Typical Application Circuit of SM72442. My question is related to the voltage divider containing RB3 and RT3. This voltage divider is connected to PIN A4 of SM72442 and is used for output current limiting. According to voltage divider rule maximum voltage that can appear at PIN A4 is 5V since the supply is of this potential. 

    Question 1: What is the maximum output current that can be limited using PIN A4?

    Question 2: Is additional current sensing amplifier needed to be attached as there is a box in Typical Application Note of SM72442 ?

    Question 3: Is additional PWM Driver  needed to be attached as there is a box in Typical Application Note of SM72442 ?

  • A1: PIN A4 is used to set the current threshold where SM72442 is to be reset. When AIOUT level exceed this PIN A4, device is reset.

    A2: To limit/keep the output current at maximum level, additional current sensing amplifier is needed as the application circuit in AN. This maximum current set point should be lower than the threshold of PIN A4. Therefore PIN A4 is actually not used in application circuit in AN, just pulled up.

    A3: SM72442 is AFE + digital controller, operating at 5Vtyp. To drive high-side FET, additional FET gate-driver is needed. SM72295(100V H-Bridge gate-driver)  is practically companion chip.
