obsolescence of BQ28PL116

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78PL116, BQ76PL102

Why is the BQ78PL116 not recommended for new designs?

Is this the only part TI offeres which does active cell balancing?

Why is the BQ76PL102 still recommended when it is supposed to work with the PL116?

Thanks and Best Regards, Tim Starr on behalf of NG@BF

  • Timothy,

The PL114 and PL116 are our only devices that offer active cell balancing. The device was moved to NRND for several reasons. The primary ones are the complexity of the parameter set is very challenging to most users and the they it difficult to configure the device for good performance. The device is also not very well suited for LiFePO4 cells and we find that many new applications for the device use this chemistry. Our newer devices have been optimized to support the newer battery chemistries and provide a simpler parameter set.

We will move the PL102 for NRND status as well, since it cannot be used with the PL114 or PL116 controller.

We will continue to manufacture the PL102, PL114 and PL116 devices, so you should not be concerned about assurance of supply.

    Best regards

    Tom
