BQ24165 BGATE MOSFET Question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24165

Hi,

I have a question about the pMOS connected to the BQ24165's BGATE pin. In the schematics of the datasheet, fig. 1, page 10, the source is connected to the system load while the drain is connected to the battery. From what I understand from reading the datasheet, this pMOS is supposed to provide a low resistance path for current to flow from the battery to the load. However, pMOS conducts current from the source to the drain (please correct if I am wrong), and therefore, the only way for the current to flow from the battery to the load is through the body diode, which is unfavorable due to the diode voltage drop and inefficiency. In short, the pMOS looks connected wrongly.

Could anyone please enlighten me?

Thank you.
