What LED arrays do others use?

Hi,

I am thinking about using a TI TLC5951 LED driver chip. The chip has three groups of 8 channels (24-channels, constant-current sink). If you have successfully used a pre-packaged two-dimensional LED array in conjunction with the TLC5951, or similar driver chip, I'm interested in finding out what product you used.

At the moment I have not found anything I can easily connect to the driver chip; most LED dot matrix (2D arrays) packages need to have a row and a column signal provided to activate a particular LED in its array.

Hello Shiva,

TLC5951 main appricaions are LED large video display and LED message board like the foloowing URL

(I don't know whether the URL company uses TLC5951 or not).

So they use packaged LED which 3 colors, Red/Green/Blue LED are assembled into 1 package like the

following URL.

Dear Nakai-san,

Thank you for the information. I thought this might be the case, but I am amazed. The TLC5951 can drive 24 LEDs, and these displays have on the order of 100,000. That would mean ~4000 TLC5951 will have to be utilized, which seems cost prohibitive.

Dear Shiva,

Yes, in the case of static drive system, you are correct.

Static drive means that each constant current output drives only one LED lamp.

But if the multiplexing drive system as shown on the following PDF is used, the total number of LED driver

can be reduced.

Multiplexing drive means that each constant current output drives two LED lamp or more with time sharing.

Recently, the rate of multiplexing to the total number of display panel has been increasing because LED luminous efficiency is getting higher.
