Fast Transient 1.5A DC-DC Switcher

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62140, TPS61253, TPS63020

I am looking for a fast transient response DC-DC switcher that can generate 1.5A out at 5v, given a 6-20v input? Also would like to find a part that could run off of a single Lithium Ion Battery from 2.5v to 4.2v and generate the same 5v @1.5A..The 1.5A is running a RF modem so it would normally be 100ma or less but spike when transmitting. I looked at some specialized TI Power Amp DC-DCs but didn't see anything in that range that would have fast transient response..

Any suggestions?

Charles

  • DCS-Control is the best transient response you can get, so I would look at the TPS62140 for the buck solution.  Vin doesn't go quite to 20V, but from your 6-20V range, it sounds like your source is not quite defined yet.

The TPS61253 is a new boost that has a high switching frequency and thus small inductance.  This enables fast transient response.

Another option for the boost is the TPS63020 buck-boost converter.  You can add as big an output cap as you want to keep the voltage droop from a transient to a minimum.
