I have been working with an evaluation board for the bq24160 charger IC and have been struggling for several days with intermittent behavior. To make a long story short, I have found that the plastic housing that encloses the HP172 USB-to-I2C adapter has a plastic bezel on the USB connector end that is too thick to allow the mini-USB connector to plug in all the way. If I either shave off 1/16” of plastic from the plug or remove the bezel from the case and plug it in all the way the problem disappears. I have verified this on four HP172’s we have and several USB cables. I understand that the HP172 is used for many evaluation kits and thought you would want to know. This is especially bad when the application offers to update the firmware with a new adapter then the connection is inadvertently broken during the upgrade.
