BQ Tesla Receiver Resonant Capacitor Selection

Greetings,

I noticed that the selection for the Rx side resonant capacitor is X7R material instead of the more stable C0G/NP0. I presume the driver is cost. Can you provide any practical advice regarding the change in capacitance vs. AC and DC voltage that affect the self-resonant behavior of the secondary?

As understand the C0G/NP0 material is so stable that many of these effects are negligible.

  • The Texas Instruments bqTESLA family of bq5101X receiver will perform well with X7R capacitors.

COG/NPO can be used also, you will see improved efficiency due to the lower capacitor ESR.  But this type of capacitors will cost more and are physically larger.
