bq20z75 V 1.60 PF status VSHUT and AFE_C

Dear all

One of our batteries controlled by the bq have had two failures both with the PF status VSHUT and AFE_C.(both at the same time).  Resetting the PF status everything seems to work OK.  Is this type of failure experienced when  the bq20z75 is used in an environment with noise ?" The AFE Fail Limit is set to 10. - I do not know whether this setting has any influence on this failure type. We have a rather complex loading (pulsed load with ripple currents) .

I would appreciate any comments because I regards the PF failure as "uncomfortable"

Best regards

  • Kjell,

The VSHUT fault means that the device tried to go into Shutdown, but it was aborted. The AFE_C fault indicates that there are communications errors between the two die inside the device. Both of these could be caused by excessive noise and / or resets. Make sure that the decoupling capacitors are placed close to the device and have a good connection to ground. This will help improve robustness and hopefully eliminate these faults.

  • Hi Tom,

Thanks for your answer. The hardware design is already done according to the best practice described in our design guide lines, but I have no problem understanding your "diagnose" and if this seems to be a real problem we have to redesign the pcb..

If this was an exeptional situation causing the interference - will an increase in the value of the AFE Fail limit setting help to reduce the "sympthoms" ? It is now set to default 10.
