Operating temperature of the inductor on PTH08T220W

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PTH08T220W

Hi,

I would like to know the operating temperature of the big inductor (please provide me the manufacturer part number if it is possible) on module PTH08T220W. In the system that I worked on, there is no air flow for cooling (water-cooling base plate is used). When we tested the board without heatsink to the inductor, we observed that the inductor's surface temperature reached 130degreeC ( output setting 15A@3V ). If you can provide me the operating temperture of the inductor, it will help us to select what type of heatsink material to use (there is space between the top of the inductor and the base plate, thermal pad will be used to make the contact).

Thanks,

Min.

I revewed the thermal data published  with no air flow with 12Vin and 3Vou at 15Amp load. The absolute derated  maximum inductor  and component temperature is 130°C. The module must be soldered into a 100mm x100mm double sided 2 ounce PCB to meet the published SOA thermal data.  Any heat sink may improve  the inductor ambient operating temperature from 25°C per the SOA  curve to about 45°C to 55°C.  This change  would be equivalent to 200LFM air flow  with water cooled heat sink. Without air flow , the maximum ambient temperature is 30°C.

What is the internal ambient temperature of this  system?
